 FAQs

  • Nutritional Psychiatry is a rapidly growing field that explores how specific nutrients and dietary patterns influence mental health, and can be used as alongside traditional treatments for mental health conditions like depression and anxiety.

  • There is substantial evidence showing that what we eat is linked to our mood and mental health. Multiple clinical studies now show that improving diet quality can significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Based on this evidence, in 2020, the Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists officially included dietary recommendations in their clinical guidelines, recognising nutrition as a foundational component of mental health care.

  • The gut and brain communicate constantly through the "gut-brain axis." This means digestive issues can affect mood, while stress and anxiety may contribute to gut symptoms and cause changes to the gut microbiome. This interconnection explains why digestive and mental health problems - like IBS and anxiety/depression - often occur together. Improving gut health through nutrition and lifestyle changes may benefit both physical and mental wellbeing.

  • A mental health dietitian provides specialised nutritional support that addresses the intricate connections between food, mood, and mental well-being. They can help by:

    • Offering evidence-based dietary interventions for conditions like low mood, depression, anxiety and other mental health conditions

    • Helping clients navigate medication side effects and other food-related challenges common in mental health conditions - including fatigue, appetite changes, and emotional eating patterns

    • Providing support for co-existing gut conditions like IBS as well as chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease

    • Working as part of a multidisciplinary mental health team to provide comprehensive nutrition care to support broader mental and physical health

  • My comprehensive approach recognises that gut health and mental health are interconnected, addressing these symptoms together through evidence-based dietary interventions that support both IBS and mental health symptoms together. Depending on the severity of your gut and mental health symptoms, the approach is tailored to your individual needs.
